The geko™ device may be used by anyone who might benefit from increased, lower limb circulation to prevent blood clots as well help to reduce swelling after a surgical procedure. The device can also be used for patients that have had a soft tissue injury like an ankle sprain.
The geko™ device mimics the process normally achieved by walking (up to 60%) without the patient having to move or exert energy and without uncomfortable muscle movements.
How to use the geko™?
Fitting the device
The device will be fitted to your operated leg and might be placed on your non-operated leg be used for DVT prevention and edema reduction. The device could be fitted before your surgery providing it is not going to interfere with your surgery. In the case of a knee replacement the device might be put on the non-operated leg in the pre-operative area and then the other device will be put on your operated leg right after the procedure in the operating room or in the recovery area.
The geko device is very simple to fit. Once it is applied, it will feel like an adhesive bandage has been applied to your skin. When the geko is switched on you will see green flashing LED lights indicating that the device is active and which stimulation level has been set to get a foot twitch. On the underside of the strap, covered by a water-based conductive hydrogel for secure adhesion, negative and positive electrodes deliver painless nerve stimulation to the common peroneal nerve. The correct stimulation level will be initially set based on the level of stimulation set by your clinician. Once the correct level is selected, you will notice an automatic outward movement of your foot, which will become less noticeable after a few minutes. Your awareness of the muscle contractions should gradually lessen as you wear the device. You should be able to walk around as well as sleep with the device switched on. If you find that that the it is bothersome while you sleep you can always decrease the setting level by pressing the “-“button. Make sure you increase the level when you wake up in the morning by pressing the “+” button.
If you are going to shower, make sure you remove the device. First turn off the device by pressing either button for about 3 second. Make sure the green lights are no longer blinking. You then can remove the device and place it down with the sticky side facing up. Once you have showered, dry the area and place the same device back on your leg and turn on as you did earlier.
How long do I wear the device?
- After surgery, the device will be worn 24 hours a day for up to 10 days. Your surgeon will determine the number of days to wear the device.
- For injuries not requiring surgery like an ankle sprain, the device can also be worn for up to 10 days. Your surgeon will determine the number of days to wear the device
- The device should be changed out every 24 hours.
