NEST

The NEST tackles a key challenge for shoulder surgery patients: persistent pain during sleep. Despite successful surgery and minimal daytime discomfort, many patients wake after several hours in severe pain, unable to rest comfortably. Surgeons often recommend recliners or sleep wedges for better positioning, but recliners are costly and impractical for short-term use, while wedges fail to support the arm and allow patients to slide down the bed, exacerbating discomfort.

Developed through years of rigorous design and testing, the NEST combines the structured support of a recliner with the portability and comfort of a body pillow. Its innovative, malleable core enables precise arm positioning to reduce strain and prevent reinjury. Two secure capes anchor the device to the bed, eliminating slippage, while an integrated elbow block prevents painful shoulder extension, ensuring optimal alignment. Lightweight and user-friendly, the NEST promotes pain-free, restorative sleep, empowering patients to recover confidently at home.

Set Up Guide: NESTRestbetter.com/guide

Follow instructions below and reverse side for setup

and use

NEST Parts: Worm (1) - Cape (2) - Elbow support (2)
NEST SETUP:
Get Ready
1. Take apart the NEST pieces from each other.
2. Get your bed ready by taking off pillows and
folding down your blankets and sheets.

Set It Up
3. Open and flatten the worm into one long tube.
Make sure the zipper faces away from you.
4. Hold the worm about one-third of the way down
with one hand. Bend the end up toward the sky.
Do the same for the other side to make a U-shape
that holds your body. Turn the worm so the ends
point to the foot of the bed.
Lock the NEST in Place
5. Slide one cape gently over the arm of the worm
closest to the bed's edge until it reaches the
middle. You will use this to tuck into the space
between the mattress and the bed frame at the
head of the bed.
6. Move the worm to the head of the bed and tuck
the cape softly between the mattress and the bed
frame.
7. Do the same with the second cape, but put it on
the arm closest to the bed's edge. Then tuck it
between the mattress and the bed frame on the
side.
Finish Setting Up
8. Put your pillows back on top of the worm. We
suggest making a T shape to support both your
head and back. Add or remove pillows for
comfort.
9. Take one elbow support and wrap it around the
arm closest to the inside of the bed, right in front
of your pillow. This stops your elbow from sliding
back while you sleep.
10. Get into your NEST and pull the worm across your
body to support your affected arm.
11. If your affected arm needs more support, gently
slide more of the worm to toward that side. This
will give you less support under your unaffected
arm but more support under the surgical side

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does sleeping hurt after shoulder surgery?

It comes down to position. When you are upright during the day, gravity pulls your arm down and keeps the humeral head, the "ball" of the ball and socket, seated low in the joint. Lying flat takes that away. The ball drifts upward and pinches the tissue above it, which is usually already inflamed after surgery. At the same time, your shoulder settles behind the plane of your body, which pushes the joint forward and creates pain in the front. Those two things together are why most surgeons tell you to sleep propped up at an incline or in a recliner.

How does the NEST help?

The NEST holds you at a reclined angle in your own bed while supporting your operative arm in the position you set. The elbow support keeps the arm from drifting behind you, so the shoulder stays neutral and the joint stays quiet.

Can I use the NEST for non-surgical shoulder pain?

Yes. The NEST was designed around post-operative recovery, but the position problem it solves is the same one behind most nighttime shoulder pain. Patients use it for rotator cuff tears and tendinopathy, impingement, bursitis, frozen shoulder, AC joint pain, labral injuries, and shoulder arthritis, as well as for general shoulder discomfort that has not been formally diagnosed.

Does the NEST work with a sling?

Yes. The NEST works with any sling, including those with an abduction pillow or bar. Your sling sits on top of the arm support, so nothing needs to be removed or adjusted.

What size bed does it fit?

Any size. The NEST is self-contained and does not attach to the bed frame or mattress, so it works on a twin, a king, or a couch.

Can I sleep on my side with the NEST?

Yes. Place the curved bolster behind your back and rest the operative arm on the arm support. We recommend staying on your back for the first two weeks after surgery, or until your surgeon clears you.

How much does the NEST weigh?

About 8 lb shipped.

What if my NEST gets dirty?

Every NEST includes removable microfiber covers that are machine washable.

Can I return my NEST?

Because the NEST is a personal recovery device that sits against the skin, we cannot accept returns or exchanges once it has been used.

Is the NEST HSA/FSA eligible?

Not at this time.
