Dear patient,
The surgical procedure you are having will improve pain and function, with the goal of improving your quality of life. Our team wants to optimize your perioperative care to ensure the best possible result. The surgical techniques I use are state of the art to minimize soft tissue trauma and restore the function of your joint, yet there are things you can do before and after surgery that will help as well.
I am an advocate for minimizing opioids surgery (many patients take none), using nutritional supplements to augment and optimize healing, and using multimodal pain control like cold therapy around the surgical process. What can you do to help?
To enable a faster, more comfortable, and more predictable rehab, I highly recommend:
(1) optimizing your preoperative nutrition! Focus on increasing protein intake (aim for at least 80g daily) and decreasing carbohydrates.
(2) cold therapy! The NICE1 device is phenomenal if it is in your budget.
(3) elevation! This will mitigate some of the postoperative swelling that naturally occurs after major surgery.
For those patients who are interested, I have also provided favorite recommendations to help with incision management, scarring, compression, and easing back into your home.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions.
Sincerely,
H. John Cooper, MD
